We are so very excited to be offering the Worcester Youth Press Project for the very first time this fall!  What is the WYPP? It’s a 10 week class for students in grades 5 - 12 that focuses on the skills and creative arts that go into publishing various independent print and online media projects.

Students involved in the Level 1 class this fall will:
- receive explicit instruction in various forms of written expression
- explore a wide variety of independent print and online media projects
- create original artwork using studio materials and online
- conduct interviews with local artists, athletes, musicians, journalists, filmmakers, and entrepreneurs, other community members

- learn to use various programs in order to publish an independent project both online and in print
- plan and host a project release party and presentation

Students, this is an amazing way to learn how to get your creative voices, thoughts, and views out into the community using language, art, and technology.

Parents and teachers, this is an amazing way for your kids and students to receive explicit instruction and guidance practice in oral and written expression, organization, critical thinking, executive functions, and creative and journalistic arts.

LEVEL 1 Session is for students who have not taken WYPP Classes previously.

LEVEL 2 Classes are for students who have taken the WYPP LEVEL 1 Class and are looking to continue their publishing joint. Students will be using all of the skills they learned publishing their ZINE in the first class, and wiljlbuild on those skills.

An Early Literacy ART Book Club for
Emergent Readers

What is "The PAINTED Word" Program at ArtReach?

The PAINTED Word is a literacy program that incorporates a "whole book" approach to learning where language, words, and pictures, creatively bring books and a love of reading into the daily lives of young, emergent readers.

What happens during a class?
Students are introduced to a different, age appropriate, book each week.  The author and illustrator are introduced and defined as to their role in the book, and then we read.  Sometimes together, with each child holding a board book version of the story so they may follow along.  Sometimes we read as a group and point out sight words, pictures, and add sounds and movement to our experience.  We ALWAYS make a connection to the ART!  How do the pictures relate to the story?  What is the style or technique the illustrator used?  Can you make a connection to the words and/or the pictures?  Can you create a NEW picture — a piece of Art — that shows how you feel about the story?

All of the classes allow the student to use THEIR own visual language to create an artistic interpretation of what they have read, how they see a character or character(s), or how they think the story will continue, in a CREATIVE, hands-on, process over finished product, ARTIST OWNED, age appropriate, encouraging environment.

Students will be experimenting with different art supplies, incorporating music, language, and movement, to taking work home in a "story" based portfolio of the books they have read over the 10 weeks.

Join us after school to create a relaxing ZEN Garden as me Spring Forward with Drop-In ART Projects that celebrate the season!
